New demographic trends will significantly affect economic growth, government expenditure and pension systems (both pay-as-you-go and funded). Over the last 15 years, numerous models, forecasts and reports prepared by international organizations, in particular by the OECD and the European Commission, have attempted to estimate the economic consequences of population ‘ageing’.
