Abstract

Stanzas 9–16 of the Old Norse mythological poem Vǫluspá (‘The Seeress’s Prophecy’) contain the story of the creation of the dwarfs, one of the races that inhabit the world of Scandinavian mythology. The poem includes their genealogy and a list of their names. This ‘catalogue of the dwarfs’ was the source of the names for Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, Balin, Dwalin, Fili, Kili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur and several other Dwarves in TH and LR.
