Abstract

We have seen in the previous chapter that the rise of the Tatar national movement in Tataria in the late 1980s could not be linked to the existence of some sharp social division between Russians and Tatars. On the contrary, nationalism emerged in an atmosphere of growing homogeneity between them. What, then, is the source of nationalist sentiments?
