Abstract
This book initially grew out of the general observation that language issues, over the last decade, have been attracting increasing attention in the media, in the public debate, and in the concerns of national governments and international organisations. In some cases, language issues may be but one dimension of a more complex system, in which ‘ethnicity’ or ‘nationalism’ are in the foreground. However, even in those situations where language is, at first sight, not central, closer scrutiny often reveals the presence of a language question — or at least, of a language-related question.
