Understanding Text about Alzheimer’s Dementia

Managed health care often presents obstacles for both health care providers and patients. Although clinicians are required to manage the increasingly complex health care needs of individuals, managed care usually permits few opportunities or incentives for health care providers to spend the extended time required in explanations of information for patients and family members to completely understand their health care needs. “This development in the way health care is currently delivered has put the onus squarely on the shoulders of patients and their families not only to understand complex treatment choices but also to make informed decisions regarding them” (Russell-Pinson 2002: 5). As a consequence, print and Internet sources are becoming increasingly popular avenues for dispensing health care information for patients and their caregivers (Bauerle Bass 2003; Brody 1999; Fisher 1996; Napoli 1999) and, based on the desires and needs of patients and family members to know more about their own health and disease processes, researchers predict that this trend will continue in the coming years (Bauerle Bass 2003; Kassirer 1995; Parker et al. 1999; Sharpe 2000; Zeliff 2001). As Sharpe (2000: 207) points out,

Today patients can locate information on virtually any illness or condition on virtually any number of Web sites. They can access and search “virtual” medical and nursing libraries, and then compose and propose thorough and meaningful inquiries and comments about their health and care. Well-guided access to information on the WWW can educate patients, reduce their fears, uncertainties, and anxieties, and enhance communication between patients and provider. Knowledge and facts can improve attitudes, encourage compliance, provide hope, and improve the prognosis for recovery.
