Born in Grantham in Lincolnshire in 1925, Margaret Thatcher was destined to become the most influential female politician in British twentieth-century history. She was elected as leader of the Conservative Party in 1975 and became Prime Minister in 1979, and remained so until her resignation in November 1990. Her guiding beliefs have been summarised by her biographer Hugo Young as follows:
