Abstract
This chapter examines the effects on women of the structures in these male-dominated occupations. It demonstrates the consequences of the structural difficulties and barriers they face. These begin with entry into the occupation through the recruitment and selection processes. Then, on a day-to-day basis, structures and procedures adversely affect their career development and opportunities, chances of promotion, pay and working conditions. The chapter directly examines this structural discrimination through women’s voices, which also allows them to express their views and feelings on these issues.
It’s very hard to get in with the ‘old boys network’ when you’re not old and you’re not a boy!
