Abstract
Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev was leader of the Soviet Union between 1964 and his death at the age of 76 in November 1982. During this time the Soviet Union was, with the United States, one of two superpowers dominating global affairs. The entire international system was based around this bifurcation of power and influence between the USSR and the United States. At any given time during his eighteen years in power, Leonid Brezhnev was one of the two most powerful people in the world.
