Abstract
Britain genuinely wanted to improve relations with Italy, but Eden insisted on giving nothing away, at least until ‘Count Rossi’ had left Majorca. Dino Grandi, who understood the British attitude well, cabled Rome on 20 December, Non è certo nel nostro interesse fornire … sussidi a Rossi per sedurre Majorca (It is certainly not in our interest to provide … subsidies to Rossi to seduce Majorca)’1 The impetuous young Fascist was removed soon afterwards.
