Abstract

The Republic’s military débâcle of Spring 1938 and the division of its territory into two parts, led to a political crisis. The unity of the Popular Front had to be reinforced and foreign governments convinced that the disaster could be remedied by large-scale arms deliveries. The aim of the Spanish Communist Party and its advisers was to inspire resistance until the expected European war and to get rid of Indalecio Prieto, Minister of National Defence, whom they saw as a liability.
