Abstract

The removal of Khrushchev as party leader saw the swift end to the anti-religious drive, to be replaced by a more stable system of bureaucratic control characteristic of most aspects of public life under the new leadership of Leonid Brezhnev. In 1965 the Council for the affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church was merged with the Council for the affairs of Religious Cults to form the Council for Religious Affairs, headed by Vladimir Kuroyedov.
