Abstract

From the West Germans, Finlandisation (Finnlandisierung) and the related practices of self-censorship represented the Cold War, the threat of Soviet domination and the permanent division of Germany. The most extreme comments maintained that this course would lead to the gradual deterioration of all Western Europe with regard to democracy and the freedom of the press. West Berlin, situated in the middle of the German Democratic Republic, was in a particularly precarious position.
