Abstract
The 37 years between the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and the formal conclusion of the NEP in 1990 were a period of unprecedentedly rapid economic growth and change. The purpose of this chapter is to present an overview of the international economic environment during this period, the rate of growth and pattern of structural transformation in the Malaysian economy, and finally a discussion of the role of the state in the process.
