Abstract
The word ‘competition’ is derived from its Latin root ‘competitus’, which means to strive together, or to seek together. While competition exists at the core of sport, it is competition’s interdependence with co-operation which underpins the success of sport witnessed in all corners of the world. Sport offers the opportunity to view kaleidoscopic images of competition on the field of play, which can be mobilised in other aspects of social life.
The most fruitful approach is not to ask why girls and boys are so different but rather to ask how and under what conditions boys and girls constitute themselves as separate, oppositional groups.
