Abstract

On the eve of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in May 1953, the Daily Express in London publicized a hitherto secret defence arrangement in mock-sensational terms: ‘Out of the Empire’s hush-hush defence file comes ANZAM — the phantom organization which has planned Imperial strategy linking Australia, New Zealand and Malaya since the war. So far ANZAM has been concerned with paper armies. Now the Empire Prime Ministers are to discuss urgent plans for putting it on an operational basis…’
