Abstract

An accelerating epidemic of this proportion (of “biblical proportions,” says one AIDS expert1) does not just go away. Four possible developments, however, could make this epidemic diminish:

  1. 1

    We could find a cure.

  2. 2

    Human behaviors could radically change.

  3. 3

    The virus could become weaker.

  4. 4

We could develop a preventive vaccine.
