Abstract

We have already touched on some of the factors which contributed to the ending authoritarian rule, and on the prospects for democratic development. The aim of this chapter is to look more systematically at the concepts of democratic transition and consolidation, and at explanations of the extent and limitations of these processes. We shall then go on to examine the specific cases of Ghana and Tanzania in subsequent chapters.
