Abstract

Drawing on many years of consulting experience with multinational companies my firm conclusion is that most have lost the art of strategic thinking and development. Effective competitive strategy has ceased to be the driving force in many organisations. Strategy has been relegated down the executive agenda. It's typically a staff function that comes out of its back office once a year to facilitate the annual budget review. It's often seen as theory rather than practice. It's sometimes regarded as a waste of time, out of touch with the immediate needs of line managers.
