Abstract
As the political battle in mid-seventeenth century England between King and people reached a crisis point, Oliver Cromwell’s remarkable military skills propelled him into political prominence following the execution of King Charles I. Undefeated in battle, he spent the five years of his Protectorate until his death balancing the conflicting forces of the Royalists, the army, Scottish Presbyterians, populist Levellers and a host of religious minorities.
