Abstract

Andrew Carnegie’s leadership in forging what became the world’s largest and most profitable integrated steel company in the post-Civil War United States reflected both superior business acumen and effective leadership skills. While he espoused a host of worthy values - a commitment to American democracy and liberal economics, a Chartist belief in workers’ rights, and global pacifism - often these values were subordinated to his relentless, enthusiastic pursuit of building an industrial empire.
