Abstract
Arguably the most successful military commander in recorded history, over a ten-year period beginning in 334BC Alexander of Macedon conquered an empire extending from Greece through the Persian Empire to the Himalayas. He thus achieved his driving personal ambition to become the ‘King of all Asia’. Although his leadership skills centred on maintaining the discipline and loyalty of his Macedonian army in pursuit of this personal vision, he also made a determined effort to broaden his base of support to include Persian and other conquered nations.
