Abstract
Rarely has a leader exercised effective power for decades in a major nation without a political or military infrastructure beneath him. Mohandas Gandhi achieved this unique leadership role in India in the twentieth century by propagating and living a vision of truth through sacrifice, with truth defined as a community living in peace, respecting the rights of all its members, and relying on its own efforts to support itself. Confronted with the inevitable opposition and likely violence, he accepted the need for sacrifice, including that of his own life.
