Abstract

The abrupt collapse of the Barzani Kurdish insurrection in Iraq was a setback to Kurdish aspirations, not only in Iraq but also to Kurds in Turkey and Iran, who had closely followed Barzani’s fortunes and misfortunes and had listened to inflammatory exhortations beamed out on insurgent Iraqi radio broadcasts. Many Kurds, some for the first time, became aware of their Kurdish identity and potential. These Kurdish stirrings began to alarm governments.
