Abstract

There are many forms of instruction, both religious and secular, in Africa as elsewhere, all of which play an important part in human development and social reproduction. The focus in this chapter—partly, it must be admitted, for parochial reasons—is on the availability of ‘modern’ Western schools—formal education—to Africa’s youth. Similarly, there are many levels and types of school, but the basic concern is the availability to all of a minimum level of primary schooling.
