Abstract
In Chapter Three we looked at one aspect of the political debate in Scotland — the idea that voting patterns in Scotland are inextricably linked to a complex array of social identities. In this and the following chapter we turn our attention to political values and attitudes in order to investigate Scottish distinctiveness and the sources of any differences. A distinction is often drawn in the academic literature between political attitudes and political values (Feldman, 1988), with attitudes and opinions being the application of value systems to policy issues. Thus, in this chapter we focus on value systems in Scotland, whilst Chapter Five looks at policy preferences.
