Abstract
As the Japanese would be the first to admit, it was their good fortune in the Second World War to be largely defeated by the Americans so that the Occupation was an American affair. A Soviet occupation, as Eastern Europe displayed, was a rougher matter. One by Britain would have been similar to that of the American, but London had other priorities and was materially overstretched and massively outclassed by American power.
