Abstract

Luanda, according to those who knew her in palmier days, was the most beautiful city in Africa. Even the most censorious observer of the squalor I found in 1992 could not fail to discern traces of faded elegance. Conceived by its original architects to enhance the graceful sweep of a wide, curving bay and natural harbour, the city immediately reminded me of Rio de Janeiro, except there were no steep hills or Corcovado dominating it.
