Abstract

Despite the heavy weight of the burden of the past, political allegiances in the 1990s are likely to be qualitatively different from those typical of the 1960s and early 1970s, not only because most people have learned from the mistakes of the past, but also, and possibly more importantly, because the cyclical nature of economic activity, together with long-term economic expansion, have provoked fundamental changes in Chilean society.
