Abstract
The major aim of this chapter is to introduce, link and put in context the different themes that the rest of the chapters of the book address. In doing so this chapter will attempt to capture and preliminarily assess some of the major socioeconomic and political changes and developments brought by oil, and to reflect on the major development challenges facing the countries of the Gulf.
