Abstract

This chapter continues the examination of organizational issues which arise in congregations by looking at the difficulties faced by religious functionaries (‘ministers’) in defining and implementing their roles.1 Issues are analysed under three broad headings: role boundaries; controlling or empowering laity; and struggles for power. A distinction is made throughout between the perceptions of lay people and those of ministers themselves.
