Abstract
Achebe has been publishing short stories since his student days and his most comprehensive collection, Girls at War and Other Stories (1972), brings together thirteen stories written over a period of twenty years. As he says in the Preface this is ‘a pretty lean harvest’. Yet the stories which range from the ‘primal ingenuousness’ of the student pieces to the bitter assessments of the Civil War succinctly reveal aspects of the writer not apparent in the novels.
