Abstract
Grice’s fourth sub-maxim of Manner — be orderly — states that participants of a conversation should recount events in the order in which they happened. We should not say ‘Charles saw a lion and opened his eyes’ but ‘Charles opened his eyes and saw a lion.’ It seems to me, however, that this maxim contains an oversimplified notion of the order of events.
