Abstract

The influence on the infant Liberal Party of the distinguished, experienced ‘old liberals’ was far greater than that of the newcomers. The former are typified by Donald Molteno, Native Representative MP 1937–48, dedicated supporter of the underdog and passionate believer in the non-racial, liberal system his grandfather, as Prime Minister, had introduced to the Cape colony with Responsible Government in 1872. His leader in Parliament, Margaret Ballinger, shared his convictions and his position as a member of the ‘cultural elite’.
