Abstract
This book began with the observation that a persistent ‘agrarian myth’ has coloured mainstream economic analyses of Asian agriculture. Despite massive evidence to the contrary, proponents of this perspective continue to imagine a countryside populated by a mass of homogeneous, small-scale producers, cultivating primarily on the basis of family labour, and living in ‘traditional’, corporate communities.
