Abstract

Throughout this book I have tried to identify a cluster of important issues and problems that tie in with the project of realism as it relates to sociology and social psychology in particular, and to the social sciences more generally. This has involved identifying the key tenets of the realist project and subjecting them to a constructive critique. The ‘constructive’ element is all important since my intention has been to lend support to realism while endeavouring to come to terms with what I take to be its shortcomings as it is presently constituted. Of necessity, this has required a serious engagement with formal issues of a philosophical and theoretical nature, although throughout, I think I have managed to retain sight of more down-to-earth matters.
