The origins of the German Social Democratic Party (SozialdemokratischePartei Deutschlands - SPD) can be traced back to the General Workers'Association (Allgemeiner Deutscher Arbeiterverein - ADAV), founded inMay 1863 by Ferdinand Lassalle, a former Liberal leader who had turnedsocialist but not Marxist. The new organization sought to extend the limitedsuffrage and called for the building of socialism through the creation of anetwork of state-supported producers' co-operatives, even if the stated endgoalwas indeed the abolition of private ownership of land and capital.
