Abstract

1995 was the centenary of the death of William Morris – designer, poet, publisher, socialist and owner of a firm which specialized in interior decoration. At that time there were many commemorative exhibitions and conferences both in Britain and overseas. In fact exhibitions were held across the world, including Japan. In 1996, following a successful exhibition held in 1995 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, a giant exhibition opened in Tokyo at the National Museum of Modern Art.
