Abstract
Greenfield Village. Yes, Mister, Madam: Green Field Village. What a beautiful idea for the heritage merchants, the purveyors of escape, the dream-dealers in leisure and travel experience. The green field, like the legendary greenwood, is a place beyond the reach of the mundane world. It is ‘natural’, whereas so much that surrounds us in the metropolis is obviously fake. It is also a village — a cosy concept which immediately suggests images of community, warmth and safety. We are in an immaculate escape centre: a place where we can shrug off the chained obligations of daily life and take a leap into ‘freedom’.
