Abstract

The years 1980–92 at Independent Television News can truly be described as tumultuous. Events to be covered by ITN during the period included two wars in which Britain was a primary combatant nation; the momentous social, political, economic and defence consequences of the collapse of the Iron Curtain between East and West after forty years; the last, dangerously unpredictable, writhings of the apartheid regime in South Africa, as well as the continuance of the United Kingdom’s own 300-year-old running sore in Northern Ireland.
