Abstract

There is a vast gap between the national campaign, the contest designed by the party strategists and seen by the television viewers, and the local campaign directly experienced by candidates, agents and constituency workers. In the answers to a postal questionnaire1 candidates frequently testified to the total difference of focus between their activities and the obsessions of party headquarters.
