Abstract

December 9 (Friday) JM is born in Bread Street, London, probably at the Spread Eagle but possibly at the Red Rose. JM’s family Bible records in his hand that ‘John Milton was born the 9th of December 1608 die Veneris [that is, Friday] half an howr after 6 in the morning’ (BL Add MS 32,310). The date and time are confirmed in JM’s horoscope, which was cast some time after the publication of Eikonoklastes in October 1649; the horoscope is in the Bodleian (Ashmole MS 436, part I, fol. 119); see Rusche. JM’s father, also called John Milton, is a professional scrivener (in practice a notary and money-lender) and an amateur composer who had published a madrigal in Thomas Morley’s Triumphs of Oriana in 1601.
