Abstract
Japanese manufacturing investment into the advanced country markets of the US and the UK grew substantially from the late 1970s and through the 1980s. The stimulus for this wave of investment was the strong protectionist sentiment in American and European markets fuelled by the rapid export penetration of Japanese automobiles and consumer electronics products in particular. At the same time these investments were consistent with the globalization strategy of those Japanese companies.
