Abstract

This is a book about positive synergies long neglected and obscured in development discourse and policy. It is about the pivotal role of ‘faith-based’ or religiously inspired organizations in existing or nascent civil societies, and the commonalities between ‘faith’ and ‘development’ as normative ideals and moral discourses concerned with the welfare of humankind. It is about the pivotal role of faith in the identities of both the poor and non-poor, as a bridge that binds them together and links their fates. It is about the role of faith as an analytical lens through which the poor rationalize and often challenge their marginalization.
