China-Latin America: The Emerging Markets’ Axis

  • Chapter
The China-Latin America Axis

Abstract

A new strong axis of trade and investments between China and Latin America is developing. Flows of trade and investment are exceeding US $100 billion (ECLAC, 2008, 2010c), a figure similar to the trade from the EU to Japan at the end of 1990s.

The expanding link between Asia and Latin America is symbolic of the economic shakeout going on worldwide … with Europe, Japan and the US retreating from their roles as omnipotent centres to leave space for a more balanced configuration.

Javier Santiso, former chief development economist and director of the OECD Development Centre.
