Greece: On Mechanisms and Successive Programmes between Support and Innovation

  • Chapter

Abstract

Educational policies designed to address and prevent school failure have a history going back about 25 years in Greece; the first were put into place during the Socialist governments of the 1980s. These policies have not, however, assumed significant importance in the public eye in terms of debates or scientific research, despite efforts by some scholars. Instead, topics at the heart of educational debates in Greece in the last decade have mainly been about access to higher education, the evaluations of universities and the cre-ation of private universities - an initiative that has come up against serious resistance in the name of equal rights to free and public education (Donatos et al., 2006). The last three years have also witnessed lively scientific and political debates generated by the introduction of new history textbooks.
