Abstract
This chapter sets out to revisit energy security and climate security in light of the Anthropocene. We draw on the notion of the Anthropocene in order to ask what it means for conceptions of security that the environment has become an effect of human agency. The passage quoted above, which is a statement of the British Government in the 2007 United Nation Security Council debate on climate change and security, provides an ideal starting point for our considerations. The dilemma that stems from the costly downsides of the prolonged pursuit of energy security could not be expressed more plainly: the term ‘security’ appears inappropriate in ‘energy security’ as pursuing it threatens its very aim.
