Abstract

In Chapter 3 we concluded that although the economic circumstances faced by the United Kingdom public sector have very strong similarities with those previously, or currently, being experienced across a wide range of Western economies the experience of other countries provides a guide, but does not provide a blueprint, for the way the UK public sector should be reformed in an age of austerity. In facing the future, with its particular pattern of characteristics, UK Governments will need to chart their own paths, learning from others as appropriate, but not slavishly following them.
