Abstract

Ms K was a 32-year-old primary school teacher who sought psychotherapy for recurrent depression. She was currently employed, having lost several jobs previously because of friction with colleagues. In her present job she was highly critical of her immediate manager, and was on probation in her employment because she had taken so much time off from work. She reported severe stress related to angry confrontation with other staff. She had had several sexual relationships with men, which seemed to have broken down because of her increasing demands for their attention, and her feeling that they pushed her away when she was emotionally distressed. She had been treated intermittently for depression with antidepressants by her general practitioner throughout her adult life, and twice in the previous 5 years had been seen in an emergency department following an overdose of prescribed medication.
