Abstract
The impetus provided by Afro-Asian leaders meeting in Bandung in 1955 to strengthen ties between Africa and Asia and place them on a more assured basis has its origin in the long history of mutual exchanges between the two continents spanning several millennia. Notwithstanding the formidable handicaps of geography, of language and of politics, exchanges of goods and services, of ideas and knowledge have proceeded, with varying degrees of intensity, over extended periods.
