Free Choice or Gentle Force?

How Can Parental Leave Change Gender Practices?

  • Chapter
The Modern Child and the Flexible Labour Market

Part of the book series: Studies in Childhood and Youth ((SCY))

Abstract

The question of how to get fathers to take more leave during a child’s first year is a recurrent theme in the public debate, and a key point of view is that fathers ‘get’ or ‘take’ too little leave. The use of leave has been a hotly debated topic where participants have eagerly pointed to a number of scapegoats. The focus has in part been on ‘fathers wanting to take some of the mothers’ leave’ and in part on how ‘mothers do not want to give up leave’. The theme in this chapter is fathers’ use of leave.
